Banned Books Week
The most banned books in America
WELCOME TO 2023 BANNED BOOKS WEEK
Each year, the American Library Association sponsors Banned Books Week in an effort to raise awareness in the hopes of curbing the amount of challenges they see to “offensive” titles.

The top 10 most challenged books in 2022 had multiple titles flagged by concerned parents and caregivers. So much so, that 4 tied for 10th place and 2 tied for 5th place, pushing the list to 13 titles. All ten are claimed to be sexually explicit with many flagged for having LGBTQIA+ content and (gasp) profanity. While there is plenty to unpack here, the simple truth is that banning books suppresses ideas and voices that reflect the lived experiences of our youth. It prevents person exploration, community discourse, and says to young people that their issues aren’t important or don’t exist.
